The folks at Pro Timber Sports have always strived to give back to deserving organizations in their community and around the country...so they were
absolutely thrilled when the opportunity arose to start Woods & Warriors!
It all started one day when the good people from the Maine Sports Commission
introduced the Pro Timber Sports team to the good folks at V.A.S.T. (Veterans Adaptive Sports Training).
Soon after, the first Axe Throwing Demonstration for Veterans took place in southern Maine...and it was a resounding success!!
The second clinic, axe throwing for female Veterans, happened in the shadow of Mount Washington - on a morning where the thermometer read -14 Fahrenheit!!
EVERYONE showed up, EVERYONE stayed warm, and EVERYONE hit the target! The camaraderie, gentle humor and devotion to achieve success, that "Mission Accomplished" mindset that all participants displayed, was truly inspiring.
And yes, all this in the middle of a pandemic. At each of the events, all safety precautions and pandemic protocols were strictly adhered to (and always will be!), in order to protect the trainers, the participants, and the community as a whole! Masks, Social Distancing, and the constant sanitization of equipment couldn't slow down these Veterans' enthusiasm!
After the success of the first two events, the folks at Pro Timber Sports realized there was an opportunity to support our nation's Veterans in a unique way, and "Woods and Warriors" began to take shape!
Pairing the experience of the Pro Timber Sports team with the generous support of Precision Axes, the program is designed to introduce Veterans to heritage logging sports, such as True Axe Throwing, Crosscut Sawing, and even Logrolling!
Alissa Wetherbee, who founded Pro Timber Sports, has spent 20 years traveling throughout North America...competing in, teaching, and promoting logging sports.
She holds several world championships in the sport, and also holds a unique place in history, as the first (and currently only) person to logroll
across the Mississippi River (2019) and the Missouri River (2023)!
Alissa and her husband, Mike, consider themselves very fortunate that they are able to work & travel together, accompanied by their trusty hound, Pete.
They also enjoy giving back to their communities as much as possible... whether its raising and donating money for animal organizations & rescue groups, lending a hand when disaster strikes, volunteering as members of a Search and Rescue group,
or just pitching in wherever they're needed.
With the launch of "Woods and Warriors", their hope is to bring new and fulfilling experiences to those who have served!
"Veterans of the United States Armed Forces are among the most deserving members of our nation's community...we hope to provide a rewarding experience for them as they learn the heritage skills of logging sports; it is but one way we can say
'Thank You For Your Service!'"
